Sometimes you have to go back to the basics when it comes to
spending time with your spouse. It’s
funny how we can spend so much money going out to a fancy restaurant for a
special occasion or that date we rarely get because we now have kids.
Recently my husband took me out for a wonderful date. It was
a kayak adventure on our awesome waterways in Pinellas. We are so fortunate to
live in an area where we have such beautiful water all around us. Anyway, my
husband decided he was going to do something different than the normal date
night. He wanted to do a sunset kayak cruise.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous. We took the kayak out
and trolled through the water for awhile. We stopped and fished a little. Even
though we didn’t catch anything we still had a few nibbles so it was fun.
We decided to head to one of the islands. On the island we
found some unique tree stomps to sit on to have a picnic as the sun set.
As I
was watching the sun set, I thought about how beautiful and relaxing it was to
just sit and not have a care in the world. It was so peaceful. How often do we
get to take a few moments to not have television, computers, phones and kids
vying for our time? Every once in awhile we need to take time out for ourselves
as moms and parents and get away from the hustle and bustle of life. We need to
relax and enjoy nature and it’s beauty.
It is at these times the basics can be the most fun and most
memorable. Think about it: what date do you remember most? How about, that walk
in the park, the trip to the beach, feeding ducks together at the duck pond,
riding bikes on the trail, picnicking, swinging in a hammock or gazing at the
stars. All of which are relatively free.
As we started heading back in after the sun went down, I
thought the only thing that could add to this beautiful day would be to see
dolphin. I don’t know what it is, but seeing a dolphin swim around you in the
water is just an amazing feeling. I had
been searching for dolphin since we got in the kayak and there were none to be
seen. Just before I gave up hope, as fate would have it, as we kayaked in we
were surrounded by two sets of dolphin on each side. It was the completion to a
perfect date.
